Trial day as a computer scientist at redIT
On time, as usual in Switzerland, eight motivated high school students arrived early in the morning. Susanne Meierhans, our education manager, started the morning with a round of introductions. She first introduced herself and then our four learners who were responsible for the trial day. The learners put a lot of effort into developing the program and wanted to give those taking a taster as much insight into their everyday lives as possible. Of course, the company redIT was also introduced to them through a presentation. Among other things, what we stand for and which areas our services cover. The apprentices talked about their everyday school life and about the organizational issues of their future apprenticeship. Various tips and tricks as well as helpful recommendations from our side were discussed.
We made our way through the redIT building and the trial apprentices were given an insight into the various offices, teams and also our data center. During the break we continued with croissants and the anticipation grew for the upcoming tasks with the prepared servers.
First, the server components were identified and then installed in the server so that it could get up and running again. Because it is needed all day long to carry out a wide variety of installations and work. Based on ESXi, one Windows machine and one Unix machine were put into operation virtually on the servers.
RedIT's favorite pizza delivery service was called for lunch and, as usual, it delivered extremely well. The pizzas were eaten with pleasure!
After the delicious lunch, we started the afternoon freshly motivated and full of energy with an introduction to programming and scripting. After the excursion into the world of ''Robocopy'' and ''PowerShell'', those interested were offered a change of scenery into another world, that of animated blocks. The following task was to create a Minecraft server. The group was on fire and the atmosphere became even better and, above all, more tense. The creation went smoothly and the blocky adventure could be started.
At the end, Susanne held an individual interview with each trial participant to provide feedback on the trial day and to determine their suitability as a learner. A little earlier than planned, we were able to send all the trial apprentices off to a well-deserved start.
A great day came to an end and we are looking forward to a positive future with these young adults!
