EOL for Windows Server 2008 & 2008 R2
One year ago, on 14 January 2020, support for Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2 was discontinued. This therefore also applies to the regular security updates. – Without up-to-date security updates, you become a target for cybercriminals.
If you are still using Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2, migrate as soon as possible to realise higher security, more performance and last but not least cost savings.
Recommended approaches:
Solution approach 1: Cloud services
Analyse the applications running on the server and replace them with suitable cloud services – for example:
On-site (On-Prem) | Cloud |
Active Directory | Azure AD / Azure AD Domain Services |
File Share | SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams |
Exchange Online | |
ERP | SAAS ERP |
Applications | SAAS |
Databases | Azure DB Services |
Solution 2: New operating system
Analyse the applications running on the server and migrate them to a compatible and up-to-date operating system – for example:
Operating system | End date basic support | End date extended support |
Windows Server 2019 | 09.01.2024 | 09.01.2029 |
Windows Server 2016 | 11.01.2022 | 12.01.2027 |
We will be happy to advise you on any questions regarding migration and work with you to find the best solution.
